Description

This is an oil painting in memory of an old apple tree that used to grow in my back yard in Melbourne Australia when I lived there from end of 1967 up to 1978.

I was originally from Sydney, so I found Melbourne quite depressing at times because of the weather - and especially because of the constant grey gloominess of it during the cooler months. I remembered the blue skies of Sydney winters at times when Melbourne winters were rarely that.

Never the less it was home for 10 years and I gave birth to 3 children while my family and I lived there. We lived in quite a few houses and this one was the last with this tree. There we had a fairly large back yard with lots of trees in it, plus a few fruit trees. I loved this back yard and the kids had a ball with the trees, cubby houses and tree swings. It was in this home that I first made my home made apple pies and they were to die for.......seriously! I've never had them as good since. The apples from this tree were a little on the sour side, but perfect for pies! I made many a home-made pie from this tree, starting from scratch with making my own pastry as well.

I remember looking out from the kitchen window one gloomy grey Autumn day into the back yard, and as I watched on and off, whilst working at the kitchen sink, I saw a stream of light shining down from the cloudy skies above and touching this tree in such a way that it made me think of the Divine and uplifted my spirits no end. Because of this one experience and how it inspired me, I painted this as I saw such beauty in it, as well as sensing the Divine through it - ergo the title.

Sensing the divine in living things is always a priceless gift and blessing for me and a constant source of inspiration that I'm humbly grateful for even now many decades after I painted this!
