Description
This is a photo of a very old camera that I won as first prize in a children's art show that was run by the Coca Cola Bottlers Club, which was a radio childrens' show that I was very involved in as an approximately 13-14 year old with my older sister. It's a Kodak Brownie flash camera which has Starflash Camera written on the front. Now I don't remember exactly when I won this, but imagine it was around 1960 give or take a year. I was extremely proud as well as somewhat surprised when I heard of my winning this contest and receiving this camera as a result. I've done a variety of artworks based on the camera image to try and cover the differing emotions I experience around this prize and my memories I have of this experience. In this image I have one of my original drawing behind the camera image ie have used the camera image as an overlay to the drawing. Like having done that given that it was my art that won me this prize.
My sister and I often attended the live shows of this childrens' radio club and occasionally we sang together (on the radio), since we did a pretty good job of harmonizing together, particularly to the Everly Brothers' songs. I used this camera right up into my adulthood until I graduated to the more modern style of camera.
Still now I choose to keep this camera as a memorabilia of that special moment in my life, when my art was being recognised by the outside world for the first time, as well as a possible keepsake for one of my grandchildren. I remember painting a landscape with lots of trees for this competition, with trees being one of my favorite things to draw and paint at the time of my life.
That was such a long time ago......56 years ago, more or less......and have loved adding some digital textures to this image to commemorate its age and significance to me.
