Description
This is an artwork created from a photograph I took of a block of wood that was the remains of a large tree that had been growing in my neighborhood. The tree had been chopped down near a building site to make way for a new home that had been built there.
I loved the lines and patterns that were part of the natural wood in these remains and chose this particular block amongst many others that were laying about on the ground because of its natural patterns. I love trees and can be very moved and saddened when I see trees that have been chopped down, but sometimes there is a need for this to happen which no one can deny, so this is effectively my small effort of honoring this tree that once was, ergo the title. What stood out for me when I first saw this block of wood was the natural image of a face that seemed to be exposed, and in my mind seemed to be expressing the horror of that had just happened to it. So I've used a cartoon effect in highlighting what I saw in this image. It's cartoon effect is not meant to be taken seriously in the sense that it may seem that I'm trivializing what's happened to this tree. It's just me getting creative with an image that I have stored on my computer. This photo was taken in 2014 so now in 2017 it feels ok to have gotten creative with this photo in this way.
