Description
After an unusually vivid dream of a bird being released from a cage and all that was relating to this, I did some Jungian style dream work on this dream. I also felt I needed to honour this dream through painting it, as I have done with this image.
In this painting the woman and child represent my adult self along with my inner child. The bird flying out of a window represents spirit being set free.
After spending much time on this dream through active dream work and painting this, I came to a conclusion of what this dream meant for me and what it represented at this time in my life for me.
This dream represented some repressed (ie caged) energy of a feminine nature that had been locked up (a learned coping strategy from childhood) possibly from the time I was about 6-10 yrs old.....the age of the young girl in my dream. I had come to a time in my life where I was learning to let go and release this energy ie set it free. My task is to 'allow' this freedom of 'spirit' (bird), so that it can grow and so that I can learn to trust more in my own spontaneity, in order to become the creative human being that I'm meant to become.
The original painting was done in watercolour and digital effects were added after. The light emanating from the bird represent the spiritual value of this dream experience ie; the soul being set free through letting go and letting God more in my life.
Dreamwork of any kind helps to awaken the unconscious mind and aids in developing a more conscious relationship with oneself. Painting, or drawing dreams can help one to work out what one's unconscious self is trying to communicate to the conscious self. It's always a process and I've used a method recommended by Robert Johnson (a Jungian writer) in his book 'Inner Work' to come to understand my dreams when I feel the need to do so.
